2011 Pre-Season Newsletter
Welcome to fall! Temperatures are dropping, snow is forecasted for the mountains and fall is here. The trees are turning and NWVE pre-season is getting underway. The spring and summer treated the club well with athletes leading race series in cross country running, triathlon, biking and more. It was an exciting off-season in Vermont. The state hosted many competitions for elite athletes and it was nice not to have to travel so far to get to this type of event. Many members participated in the Triathlon Age Group Nationals getting top results right here in Burlington! With the enthusiasm already expressed so far the momentum is sure to take the club well into winter.
Scott has already switched things up a bit by adding a little structure to some of our preseason training. The weekly workouts have been designed to be more socially friendly to get more club members together and participating. These are very low key and if you have an idea or want to take the lead on one let us know. They have already gotten underway last Sunday 7:30pm at Gutterson for a group run. Next up is a hike. We will do Camel’s Hump taking the Dean and long trail to the summit, then returning on the Monroe trail. Meet at the Monroe trail head Sunday @ 9:00 AM.
Training at the range is underway as well. Currently our time is Monday and Wednesday nights from 5-7. This coincides with biathlon practice. If you plan to utilize the range for training please be respectful of the facility and other groups training. Use of the range for any reason is limited to scheduled training times. Using the range at other times can jeopardize everyone's future use of the range. The National Guard is very helpful in allowing us to maximize our use of these fantastic facilities. We need to act as good guests to keep this privilege. Also, please observe the base speed limit while driving on base.
The club is planning on hosting a race at the range on December 11. The backup date will be December 31 or January 2. It will be a similar format to the Bolton Season Opener. We are excited to host a race at this facility and hope that while NENSA racers will miss gauging their fitness on a climb from the pump house to the top of World Cup, they approve of the new venue.
The website is being updated. Some new photos, and a new format for the calendar. Let me know what you think.
We will be having a pre season meeting in October. Likely after the track time trials on October 22. We will briefly discuss club business, the NWVE Opener at the Range, training and racing. If you have any ideas, or things you would like to have addressed let me know and I can add it to the agenda.
Have a great fall, hope to see you at some of the pre-season workouts.
November Newsletter:
Happy Halloween!
Winter is closing in fast! We have already been teased with snow and cool temps and the real thing is not too far away. The club has been getting results right and left and it looks like enthusiasm is higher than ever for the upcoming season. Tim has been shredding the the NENSA roller skiing races like a Rock Star, (to see heavy metal video) Eric and Sarah are ready for the NYC marathon, Kevin and Elizabeth crewed for a local hammer head at the grueling Javelina Jundred 100, lots of running, biking, and triathlon results over the summer from too many to list, great turnout for the first ever NWVE fall training camp, a very decisive top 3 sweep in the Halloween Howl by Damian, Scott and Perry, … Sarah, James, Damian and Eric taking 3, 4, 5,6 in Montpelier this morning and so much more.
Bolton Opener: The Bolton Opener will be upon us before we know it. This will be the first Citizens’ Series race of the season and we would like to kick off the season in style. We are looking for volunteers and prizes. If you can put in some time the day before to prepare the course or help out with the Youth, Women’s or Men’s races let me know. If you can donate a prize or have a good connection or idea let me know. Food, clothing and gift certificates are always popular. Works of art were well-liked last year too.
Training: Seems like there are too many options for training which is a good thing. Scott has sent a dry-land schedule to bring us up to snow. Lots of training races and more to choose from. If you are planning an epic workout send it to the group list, maybe you will get a couple of takers. We will be doing the Fallen Leaves Series in Montpelier to build up our speed for the Westford Turkey Trot held 11/20/10. Let’s see if we can get 10 people on the podium this year!
NENSA: Get your NENSA Memberships in. Today is the last day of discounted registration. Tomorrow it increases by $5.00. Get the club rate by choosing Northwest Vermont Endurance. NENSA is a great organization and is behind many of the events we all ski and love. Plus you must be a NENSA member to get scored and ranked in many of the races over the season.
I hope all is well and that training is kicking in. Stay healthy and look forward to the winter. Stowe Nordic Outing Club is putting on a hard charge this season with lots of press and multiple programs requiring mandatory memberships. Could make things interesting, should be fun.
